Economic empowerment of young adults is a duty of their parents

Thursday, July 18, 2013

“A man rises to the level of his superiors or falls to the level of his inferiors according to the class he emulated through his choice of associates.”- Napoleon Hill
The challenge of unemployment: universities and tertiary institutions send out graduates all the time who cannot find work for years after graduation. This is the cause of many social challenges among youths.
Sources of economic livelihood for people:  we can generate income when we;
Get employed: - this is the largest source of income in public and private sectors. A salary is paid for the labour.
Specialize in different services: - experts in different fields are paid well for their services. These can be lawyers, doctors, auditors, engineers, and accountants.
Do entrepreneurship: - when we set up small, medium and large scale businesses, we get a profit from the sells made or services provided.
Make Investments: - investors use their money to acquire assets and businesses which generate money. Investors use their money to work for them.

Economic empowerment of the young: today there is a lot of economic challenge. Parents should consider activities that can generate money and teach the young to do them. Income nowadays can come from areas including but not limited to:- transport, marketing, trading, shop keeping, food production, bee keeping, hair dressing, tailoring, mechanics, carpentry, building, painting, plumbing, compound designing, baking, dry cleaning, accounting poultry and animal rearing.

Professor Booker. T.  Washington recommended such act ivies for the Negroes when slaves had been set free. He said that if they wanted to be recognized as real people, they needed formal education but also skills which could sustain their lives. If you have a skill and you can provide an outstanding service, you will be recognized. Booker. T. Washington was born a slave boy, but he died a Professor. I recommend you to read the book- Up from Slavery.

Many a time the employment we get, occupies all our time, and we find not any minute to do our own projects.  We need to be creative however, to develop some ideas and innovations to have some businesses running.

Many a youth today, think that because they went to school, they must find a job in formal employment sector. They have to do a white color job. This kind of mind they discard only after getting thoroughly beaten by fangs of poverty.  Folks, we sometimes need to bend to pick the coins.

A well as we need the formal education, we should never neglect the other survival skills too.  Starting now is the right option. Businesses do not grow overnight; they take steps from one stage to the next like you see the growth of children from infancy to adulthood.

Did you know it is nice to employ yourself! When no one is pushing your back! Start now, after a few years you will be big.

This is my humble call to the parents today, to train their loved dear children into those things which work, so that someone will look for them one day for them to provide a service than them looking for where to be employed.

Youths, you must work. You will not earn yourselves the goodies of life and societal respect if you have to beg in order to earn a living. In my experience, when I had no good job, I resorted to fruits selling. It is working for me and I have now a big volume of customers.

Food for thought: - who do you emulate, superiors or inferiors?
